Using a good Yoga mat is very important. The mat needs to be thin. You have to be able to feel the floor. They also have to be “sticky” to prevent slipping. Pilates mats are thicker, often twice as thick as yoga mats, because the floor exercises (in Pilates, it's about 90% of all exercises) usually require additional padding. Also, unlike in Yoga, in Pilates there is no requirement to “feel the floor”. Thick mats may pose a problem when performing balance poses. So please, if you have a choice select the mat that is exclusively made for Yoga.
